Kalona Battlefields

Versus maps are set across Kalona and its surrounding districts, featuring symmetrical layouts with new traversal options and verticality. Every map rewards map knowledge and strategic positioning.

Choose your intensity. Ranked mode tracks your skill per mode with tight skill-based matchmaking and quit penalties. Social offers 4v4 Quickplay and Player vs Bots for a more relaxed experience.

Four Ways to Fight

Every mode in E-Day Versus has been built from the ground up around the new movement system. Choose your battlefield.

Team Deathmatch mode in Gears of War E-Day
💀

Team Deathmatch

The classic Gears elimination mode reimagined for E-Day. Two teams of four battle for kills across Kalona's symmetrical arenas. Every kill earns points for your squad, and the first team to reach the score limit — or the team with the most kills when time runs out — takes the win.

  • Dynamic Respawn System: Spawn points shift in real time based on where the fighting is concentrated, keeping you close to the action without spawning you into a firing squad.
  • Cover-First Combat: The mode heavily rewards mastery of cover-based movement and close-quarters engagements. Rushing without a plan gets you gibbed.
  • Most Accessible Mode: If you are new to Gears Versus, start here. The objectives are straightforward and the pacing lets you learn movement mechanics under fire.
Conquest mode in Gears of War E-Day
🎯

Conquest

A King of the Hill variant built around rotating capture zones. Teams fight to control a single active hill that shifts position on a timer. Hold the zone to score points — but standing still is a death sentence in Gears, and every hill becomes a kill box.

  • Rotating Zones: Hills shift every 45 seconds. Teams must decide whether to rotate early and set up, or contest the current zone until the last second.
  • Team Coordination Essential: Lone players get overrun. Effective Conquest squads split responsibilities — one player watches flank, two hold the zone, one roams for picks.
  • Map Knowledge Pays Off: Knowing the fastest rotation routes and power positions for each hill location separates good teams from great ones.
Demolition mode in Gears of War E-Day
💣

Demolition

A tactical, Counter-Strike inspired attack/defend mode with no respawns per round. One team plants bombs at designated objectives while the other digs in to defend. Every decision is life-or-death — one wrong peek and you are spectating your teammates for the rest of the round.

  • Attack/Defend Asymmetry: Attackers get breaching tools and extra grenades. Defenders get fortified positions and sightlines. Roles swap at half-time.
  • No Respawns Per Round: Once you are down and your COG Tags expire, you are out until the next round. Every life matters and clutch plays are real.
  • Tactical Pacing: Rounds are methodical. Information is everything — sound cues, tag callouts, and coordinated pushes win games.
Crucible mode in Gears of War E-Day
🏆

Crucible

An escort/payload mode centered on heavy COG equipment that must be transported across the map. One player carries the payload while their team provides cover — but the carrier moves slower and cannot shoot, making them the most valuable and vulnerable player on the field.

  • Payload Carrier Mechanic: Pick up the equipment and physically carry it to the destination. The carrier is slowed and defenseless — protect them at all costs.
  • Offense and Defense in One Round: Teams alternate between pushing the payload forward and stopping the enemy advance within a single match, demanding adaptability.
  • High-Stakes Moments: Dropping the payload in a bad position can cost you the round. Coordinated smokes, suppressing fire, and body-blocking for the carrier create unforgettable plays.

Climb the Ladder

E-Day Versus features per-mode skill ratings — your Team Deathmatch rank is tracked independently from your Conquest rank. Skill-based matchmaking keeps every game competitive.

Mode-Specific Ranks: Each of the four Versus modes maintains a separate skill rating. Grinding to Diamond in TDM does not carry over to Demolition. This system rewards dedicated players who master every mode, while protecting newcomers from being outclassed when they try a new playlist.

Tight Skill-Based Matchmaking

The matchmaking system prioritizes close games over fast queues. Expect balanced lobbies where every player is within your division range — no more Gold players getting farmed by Masters.

🚫

Quit Penalties

Abandoning a ranked match mid-game triggers escalating timeouts and rank point deductions. Repeated quitters face increasing bans, protecting the competitive integrity of every lobby.

🎮

Social Quickplay

Unranked 4v4 matchmaking across all modes. Experiment with new strategies, warm up before ranked, or just play without the pressure of a visible rating. No quit penalties, but backfill keeps teams full.

Slow Is Smooth, Smooth Is Fast

The Coalition has rebuilt Gears movement from the ground up. Every action is deliberate, every movement is readable, and every mechanic creates counterplay opportunities. Here is how E-Day compares to previous Gears titles.

Mechanic Old Gears Gears E-Day
Cover Cancel Could cancel anytime during animation Must travel within 1.5m of cover to cancel
Bouncing Hyper-bouncing possible No more hyper-bouncing, more deliberate
Direction Change Instant Momentum-based, short delay
Roadie Run Main movement option Sprint starts with Roadie Run animation, then transitions
Sliding Not available Sprint into slide — can shoot during slide
Jump / Climb Must enter cover first Can mantle without entering cover
Cover Button X / A (varied by title) A button
Sprint Button Hold A LS Click (Left Stick)
Jump / Vault Various per title Y button
Design Philosophy: "Slow is smooth, smooth is fast." The Coalition designed E-Day's movement so that every action is telegraphed and readable by opponents. You cannot instantly reverse direction out of a sprint — you commit to your movement choices. This creates genuine counterplay: if you read your opponent's momentum correctly, you win the gunfight. If they outsmart you, they earn the kill.

Battlefields of Kalona

Every Versus map in E-Day is built with symmetrical lanes, vertical flank routes, and interactive cover elements that reward map mastery. Here is a preview of the confirmed launch maps.

Battleship map

Golden Quarter

Kalona's historic district with marble plazas, colonnades, and tight interior corridors. Verticality comes from scaffolding and rooftops — control the high ground or get picked off.

Camp map

Foundry

An industrial zone with molten metal hazards, conveyor belt sightlines, and elevated catwalks. The central smelting pit is a high-risk flank route that pays off for aggressive teams.

Market map

Riverside

A dusk-lit urban waterfront with bridges, canals, and submerged walkways. Long sightlines favor Marksman players, but the underground tunnels let Breachers close the distance fast.

Beta & Launch Map Count: The Open Beta (August 13–17, 2026) features Golden Quarter as the flagship Versus map. The full launch on October 6, 2026 will ship with additional maps including Foundry and Riverside, with more coming in post-launch seasons.

Sharpen Your Edge

Six essential tips to take your Versus game from fresh recruit to seasoned Gear. Learn these and you will survive longer, die less, and frustrate your opponents.

Tip 01

Master the slide — it is your new best tool for closing gaps and surprising corners. Sprint, then slide into engagements. You can fire your Gnasher mid-slide, making you a harder target while keeping your reticle on point.

Tip 02

Read your opponent's momentum — they cannot instantly reverse direction anymore. If an enemy sprints right, they commit to that direction for a brief window. Predict their path and place your shots where they will be, not where they are.

Tip 03

Use verticality — maps now have more flanking routes via climbing. Mantle ledges and climb over walls without entering cover first. The high ground advantage is real, and most players are still not checking above them.

Tip 04

Cover gaps create new angles — learn to shoot through car windows and low gaps. E-Day maps are littered with partial cover that lets you fire through openings. These unconventional angles catch enemies off guard.

Tip 05

Perfect your Active Reload — the damage boost wins gunfights. A perfectly timed Active Reload gives a significant damage boost for your next magazine. In close Gnasher duels, that extra damage is the difference between a gib and a trade.

Tip 06

Stick with your team — lone wolves get gibbed. E-Day Versus rewards coordinated team play. Push together, trade together, revive together. Going solo against a coordinated squad of four is a fast trip to the respawn screen.
